Winter weather closes westbound I-70 in northwest Kansas

A winter storm brought heavy snow to western Kansas and eastern Colorado, and the Kansas Department of Transportation has closed westbound Interstate 70 at Goodland because of the snowy conditions.    Sharon Springs reported over a foot of snow, while Goodland had 4.5 inches and St. Francis reported four inches.

Other highways in western Kansas were closed because of snowy conditions or because of traffic accidents.   Highway 54 reported a number of crashes between Ford and Kingman counties.    The highway was closed at milepost 99 in Kiowa County late in the afternoon because of a semi blocking the roadway.

A band of snow was spreading across western and southwestern areas of Kansas during the day.   A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for central Kansas, including Rice, Reno and Kingman counties where accumulations could be up to three inches.     Kingman reported an inch and a half of snow by mid-afternoon.

The snow was expected to stay west of the Wichita area.
