A Sedgwick County task force has completed work on a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, asking for a federal investigation into the death of a Wichita teenager last fall at a juvenile detention facility.

17-year-old Cedric Lofton died last September after being restrained during a struggle with officials at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center.  Wichita and Sedgwick County leaders created a task force to look at changes in the juvenile justice system and its policies and practices.

The letter to the Justice Department is asking for an investigation into any violations of Lofton’s civil rights.   County commission chairman David Dennis said last month that he was told by Sheriff Jeff Easter that the FBI had requested all information on Lofton’s death.

The task force met Monday and completed work on the letter, which is asking for an independent investigation of the circumstances leading to Lofton’s death.
