Governor calls on lawmakers to approve a bill ending the food tax

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is calling on state lawmakers to have a bill on her desk soon to eliminate the state sales tax on groceries.

The governor was in Wichita on Tuesday to tour the Kansas Food Bank warehouse and talk with its leadership and board members.   She said lawmakers should have a bill on her desk before they have their first adjournment.

Some lawmakers have suggested phasing out the sales tax, but Governor Kelly said the state budget can afford to completely eliminate the tax, because of growth in the state’s economy that has expanded the tax base.   She said it would be better for Kansans to get the total elimination of the tax, and it would be easier for retailers, keeping them from having to make changes year after year.   She said the average family of four would save around $500 a year with the elimination of the sales tax.
