The Wichita area will see an elevated grassland fire risk today.
Warmer temperatures and gusty winds mean any grass fires that start could spread quickly. A Red Flag Warning will run from noon to 7 p.m., with the highest risk being close to 4 p.m. Today’s fire risk is rated as extreme, and it will stay high the rest of the week. Things may change depending on the amount of rain that moves through Thursday.
With today’s risk labeled as extreme, you’re urged to keep from tossing cigarette butts from your car. Officials believe that’s how most grass fires in the area start, especially along highways.
