The Kansas Department of Transportation is working with the City of Wichita, El Dorado, Sedgwick County, Butler County and other partners on a long-range plan for improvements to the K-254 corridor that connects Wichita with El Dorado.
The partners also include the cities of Bel Aire, Benton, Kechi, Park City, and Towanda. They are looking for a consulting firm to direct the planning, and the process is expected to begin in late summer. The plan is expected to take 12 to 15 months to develop.
K-254 is a four-lane expressway that is considered to have a major potential for significant economic growth. Traffic safety will be a top priority because K-254 has had a number of severe accidents at intersections along the route. A corridor management plan will be the next step in addressing safety improvements.
