The City of Wichita said a processing problem has caused an increased odor in the area of a south side wastewater treatment plant.

The problem was discovered at Plant 2 at 57th Street South and Hydraulic.   People living near the plant may experience increased odors over the next two weeks because of a temporary change in the treatment process at the plant.   Staff is bringing in extra equipment to speed up the processing and they will use lime and other odor control chemicals to limit the odor as much as possible.

The city said there are no mechanical issues with the plant and there is no health impact because of the change in processing.  The cause of the change is under investigation but initial findings suggest operator error.    The city said in a press release that the plant is in compliance with all discharge requirements.   It’s expected to take about two weeks to fix the treatment process at the plant.
