Volunteers Needed for May 7th Arkansas River Trash Cleanup Event

The Arkansas River Trash Cleanup returns on May 7th.

will see hundreds of volunteers remove tons of litter, benefitting both the river and access points along the river. Over the past 18 years, more than 32
tons of trash has been collected, with 2019 attracting over 1000 volunteers. Preregistration can be made via Eventbrite. In-person registration begins at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 7, at 151 North Waco, the parking lot north of the Drury Hotel on the southwest corner of Waco and N. 1st St.

Serving as the City of Wichita’s largest Earth Day event, the Arkansas River Trash Cleanup funds will support expanded access and environmental work along the Arkansas River in Wichita.

Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple will proclaim May 7th as “Arkansas River Trash Cleanup Day,” at the April 19th city council meeting.

“The Arkansas is our river, it runs through our city, so we need to be stewards of its health and water quality,” said Albers. “We have fun doing something that benefits everyone who enjoys the river in the downtown area.”

The goal for 2022 is to sign up more than 800 volunteers and to collect two-plus tons of trash. In order to participate:

  • Register in-person to receive a free neck gaiter (while supplies last), trash bags, gloves, and grabbers between 8:30 am and 9:00 am at First Street and Waco

Don’t forget to bring your water bottle for a free sticker. Free transportation will be provided from the registration site to the river for the cleanup activities. After the cleanup, starting at 11:30 am, a free lunch will be served including grilled burgers from Cargill, hot dogs, chips, and beverages.
