One road was still closed in Reno County as crews work to evaluate the situation at the Haven Midstream gas plant following a fire and explosions Thursday afternoon.

More evacuations were ordered late Thursday night, but they were lifted several hours later.   Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar said plant operators found there was about 3,000 of liquified natural gas trapped in a containment vessel, and release valves were compromised, creating the danger for an explosion.   A mile-and-a-half area was evacuated, including the city of Haven.   Weishaar said the Salvation Army and Red Cross opened a reception center, and over 90 people were placed in hotels.

Weishaar said the risk of explosion is now significantly reduced, and people have been allowed back in their homes.  K-96 was reopened between Yoder and Haven, but Kent Road was still closed from Lake Cable to Arlington Road.     Weishaar said the fires at the plant are under control and they are actually helping to relieve pressure in the plant systems.

Firefighters and hazardous materials experts were to evaluate the situation at the plant during the afternoon, and Weishaar said they will decide on next steps.    He said at this time there is no risk to the public, but he is asking people to stay out of the area and allow crews to do their work.    The Wichita Fire Department was bringing a drone to help survey the plant.

Two workers were taken to a Wichita hospital with minor injuries after the fire.  Weishaar said it’s very fortunate that there were no fatalities.   The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
