A Wyandotte County judge has struck down legislative maps for the Kansas congressional districts.
Wyandotte County district judge Bill Klapper ruled that the maps are unconstitutional. The American Civil Liberties Union in Kansas and other organizations filed three lawsuits to challenge the maps, saying they are racially and politically gerrymandered, diluting the votes of Democratic and minority Kansans.
The map removes Lawrence and the northern part of Kansas City from the 3rd District seat and puts them in the 2nd District, which includes Topeka and rural communities across eastern Kansas.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued a statement later in the day saying he is filing an appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court.
