The Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office are having discussions on a response plan to deal with abortion-related protest activities in the area over the next few weeks.

Protests have been held in Wichita since Friday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that overturned the Roe vs. Wade decision.   A rally Monday night outside City Hall and the Sedgwick County Courthouse drew hundreds of people on both sides of the issue.   Protests are expected to continue through the August 2nd primary election, which will include a ballot question on whether to keep abortion rights in the Kansas Constitution.

Sheriff Jeff Easter told county commissioners Tuesday that a plan is being worked out for handling any arrests that may take place.  He said law enforcement agencies will be working to make sure the protests are peaceful and that both sides will be able to voice their opinion.   Easter said there were some minor disturbances with people throwing water bottles on Monday evening, but no major problems were reported.
