A Wichita police officer was attacked by a dog while investigating a disturbance at a home Sunday morning in a south side neighborhood.

Police were called to the 800 block of South Terrace around 12:30 a.m. on a report of a disturbance.   Neighbors reported that a 29-year-old woman had damaged their property during an argument.   Officers went to the woman’s home and she opened the front door, allowing a large dog to run out and attack an officer.

The officer fired three shots, striking the dog and causing it to retreat into the home.   He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a number of bite wounds to both legs.  He was treated and later released.  The dog was still alive and taken by Animal Control officers.    The injured officer was placed on an administrative assignment until he is declared fit for regular duty.

The woman was arrested and booked into jail for two counts of assault of a law enforcement officer, one count of criminal threat, criminal damage to property, interference with a law enforcement officer and an outstanding federal warrant.

Information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for a decision on charges in the case.
