  • Sedgwick County has record turnout for August primary, November election could also see big numbers

Sedgwick County had a record turnout of 45.19 percent for the August 2nd primary election, while the state recorded its highest turnout in history at 48 percent.

Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Angela Caudillo said over 90,000 people voted in person on election day, and there appears to be a trend of more people going to their polling place on the day of an election.   She said people will be able to cast ballots early for the November general election by mail or by going to an advance voting location, but if they wait until election day, they can expect to see long lines at the polling places.

In a report Wednesday for county commissioners, Caudillo said the election office will determine next year if there is a need for additional polling places.   She said because of redistricting, there is a freeze on making changes to precincts, and state law requires that an entire precinct must be assigned to the same polling place.

Caudillo said the typical turnout for a midterm election in November is 50 to 55 percent, and a 55 percent turnout for Sedgwick County would have around 182,000 voters casting ballots.

The county has almost 330,000 registered voters.  Caudillo said around 5,000 registered voters were added during the summer.
