Wichita’s school board approved $1.5 -million for the purchase of weapon detectors for the district’s high schools.

The Opengate detectors, made by CEIA, allow fast screening without people having to unpack anything to go through security. These are expected to cause minimal disruption for students that have to pass through them. According to the company’s website, the Opengate system is focused on detecting large firearms and explosive devices. Several students at Wichita’s high school were found to have handguns over the past month, but it is unclear how effective the Opengate system is at detecting smaller firearms without also alerting for smaller metal items. More on the system can be found by following the link below.

Although the school board approved funding for these detectors, there is no solid timeframe as to when they’ll be up an running.
