Sedgwick County Zoo has announced the opening of the Rogers Family Ferret Habitat, which will bring Black-footed ferrets to SCZ for the very first time.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14. The Zoo will celebrate all day long with “BFF Day at SCZ” and $2 admission, discounted from the regular $3 Winter Wednesday rate.

Black-footed ferrets were once thought to be extinct, but a very small population was rediscovered in Wyoming in 1981. Unfortunately, they suffered from disease and by 1987, only 18 remained. Seven of those bred and were luckily able to keep the species alive.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has reintroduced captive-bred Black-footed ferrets in Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Kansas, New Mexico, Canada, and Mexico. Today, approximately 300 individuals live in the wild.

Sedgwick County Zoo works with the USFWS and the Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Program to assist with annual survey events in Logan County and also supports the program with funding for supplies.
