A suspect involved in a bank robbery in Sumner County was killed during a shootout with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the robbery at Impact Bank, located at 206 East Harvey in Wellington. Bank officials told them that around 12:30 p.m., a man entered the bank in a dark jacket with light-colored pants. He was also reportedly wearing a surgical mask. The suspect then handed a note to a bank employee demanding money. The man left the bank with an undetermined amount of cash.

Bank employees were able to obtain a description of the suspect’s vehicle and shared it with law enforcement. Soon after, officials said the Kansas Turnpike Authority spotted the suspect’s vehicle crossing into Oklahoma.

Authorities said that when OHP troopers moved in on the vehicle on I-35 South, a pursuit began and gunfire was exchanged. The pursuit ended soon after on Highway 412. The suspect then reportedly fled from the vehicle into a wooded area, and when he moved to fire at deputies, he was shot and killed. No troopers were hurt.

The OHP later said the bomb squad was called to the scene because the suspect at one point claimed to have a bomb in his vehicle. As of Saturday, there were no updates provided on that development.

The Wellington Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the FBI are investigating the Case.
