Officials at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility announced the death of an inmate on Friday.

Officials said that the 38-year old male inmate was found unresponsive in a housing pod inside the facility. Detention and medical staff performed C.P.R. until E.M.S. arrived.

The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (K.B.I.) was contacted in accordance with state statute. Sheriff Investigations also processed the scene. The inmate was transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.  Preliminary reports indicated the inmate died from self-inflicted asphyxiation.

The inmate was a Wichita resident, and had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since April 14th, 2022, for one count of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and two counts of battery of a law enforcement officer.

This is the first in-custody death of 2023.
