Police in Joplin, Missouri said a southeast Kansas man shot himself as officers approached his car to arrest him on felony warrants.

The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in a parking lot outside a Joplin business.  Police said they saw 36-year-old Andrew Hegwald of Chanute, Kansas in a vehicle, and as they approached, he fired a shot.  He was taken to a hospital in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said Hegwald was wanted on warrants out of Neosho County, Kansas for statutory rape and child molestation.

Joplin officials are still investigating and no other information has been released at this time.
