The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has announced a second public meeting to talk about next steps in dealing with a groundwater contamination site in north Wichita.

The meeting will be held Saturday, June 24th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club at 2400 North Opportunity Drive.   The doors will open at 12:45 p.m.

Health officials plan to talk about next steps, and there will be information tables on different topics related to the contamination.  Representatives from several organizations will attend to answer questions from residents in the area.

The KDHE released a report on the contamination on May 6th, leading to calls from Wichita, Sedgwick County and community leaders for action to address the concerns of residents in the 29th and Grove area.   The report found there were higher rates of liver cancer among adults, and a higher rate of low birthweights among infants in the neighborhood.   It’s believed the contamination began before 1994 due to railyard activities in the area.
