A Kansas police chief who oversaw a controversial raid on a newspaper office alleged a reporter had impersonated the victim or lied when accessing the driving records of a local business owner.

The allegations are laid out in court documents related to the August 11th raid of the Marion County Record that saw officers seize computers, personal cell phones and other equipment.

The search warrant, later withdrawn by the county attorney, said police were looking for info about how the paper obtained the drunk-driving records for a local business owner.

The paper’s attorney says no laws were broken and that a reporter was using a public state website to verify information provided by a source.

The Marion City Council was holding its regular meeting Monday afternoon, but the Council said in a statement that they would not be discussing the raid and it was not placed on the agenda.

The Marion County Record released a video on Monday showing officers conducting a search on the home of 98-year-old co-owner Joan Meyer.   Our news partners at KWCH report that the video shows Mayer upset by the police activity.   She died the next day and her funeral was held Saturday.
