The City of Wichita is making plans for the first dog park on the city’s west side.

The City Council has approved plans to remove two tennis courts and a basketball court that are in poor condition at Country Acres Park near Central and Ridge Road.   Tim Kellams with the city’s Public Works Department says the nearby Harvest Park has a basketball court and tennis court in good condition.   He said replacing the facilities at Country Acres Park would reduce the duplication of services in the neighborhood.

The city’s capital improvement program includes $750,000 for design and construction and $50,000 for public art.   The council approved $800,000 for design, any needed property acquisition, and construction.

City Council Member Bryan Frye said a master plan for dog parks called attention to the need for a facility on the west side, and he said Country Acres will fill a need.  He said the park has perfect terrain with rolling hills and existing shade.
