Kansas has been given more time to file a request for a major federal disaster declaration for a period beginning in late June.
State officials have been working on a request for federal assistance in recovering from several rounds of severe thunderstorms during the summer. The storms caused flash flooding, tornadoes, high winds, large hail and lightning.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has granted an extension to September 15th to submit the request. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said the state is currently managing four FEMA-declared disasters, and the extension will allow state officials, the National Weather Service and FEMA to gather the information needed on the summer storms and the damage that was caused.
