The Sedgwick County Health Department has received the first reports of flu cases this year, with no history of travel.  In most years, the first cases are reported in October or November.

The Health Department clinic at 2716 West Central in Wichita has not received its seasonal supply of flu shots at this time.  The shots are expected to arrive in mid-September and will be offered at no cost to uninsured adults and children, and with no co-pay for children with CHIP or Medicaid/KanCare coverage.

Flu shots are recommended in September or October for anyone 6 months and older, unless otherwise directed by a physician.   More information on vaccine locations can be found at www.vaccines.gov

Symptoms of the flu include fever that lasts three or four days, body aches, chills, tiredness, cough and headache.  You can prevent the spread of flu with several steps:

1.         Get a flu shot.

2.         Wash your hands with soap and water frequently. Use hand sanitizer
if soap and water are not available.

3.         Cough and sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.

4.         Avoid close contact with people who are ill.

5.         Eat healthy foods and get plenty of rest.

6.         Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

7.         Stay home if you become ill.
