Dry conditions and gusty winds will again create a high fire danger across much of Kansas into the weekend.

The National Weather Service said a very high grassland fire danger is expected for Saturday afternoon from the Flint Hills westward across central and south central Kansas.  A very high fire danger is possible during the afternoon hours Sunday and Monday for central Kansas.    Low humidity and strong south winds will create a risk for a wildfire to spread out of control.

Fire officials are urging people to avoid outdoor burning if at all possible, and limit the use of chimineas and barbecue grills.   People are also urged to be careful with cigarettes and smoking materials.   Sedgwick County Fire District 1 officials are urging people to call 911 if they see smoke, so fire crews can check on the situation.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation because of the fire weather conditions.  The declaration will allow state resources to be positioned to help with any wildfire situations.   The Kansas Division of Emergency Management and the Kansas Forest Service will have equipment ready to help counties and local responders if needed.
