A Wichita man has pleaded guilty in the shooting deaths of two people at a downtown hotel in 2020.

A guilty plea was entered by 37-year-old Kyle Young to two counts of first degree murder.   He will be sentenced on November 21st.

Young had been charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of two people in January, 2020 at the Hotel at Waterwalk.   Police said 27-year-old George Kirksey and 22-year-old Alicia Roman were shot in a hotel room.    Investigators said Young was upset that Roman, his former girlfriend, had gotten involved with another man.

Young will not face the death penalty in the case.  The ACLU challenged the constitutionality of the death penalty in Kansas using Young’s case as a benchmark to focus on race and racial violence and the practice of death qualification in jury selection.  That’s a process where people opposed to the death penalty can be excluded from a jury.
