Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said Thursday no charges will be filed against a Wichita police officer who fired a fatal shot at an armed man in his east-side home in 2021.
Bennett said the officer was acting in self defense when she fired a shot at 41-year-old Jess Jackson. The shooting happened on October 3rd, 2021 at Jackson’s home in the 800 block of North Terrace.
Officers went to the home to check on Jackson after a woman called 911 to report that Jackson had threatened to kill himself and fired a shot through the windshield of his own car. Three officers went into the bedroom of the home and found Jackson lying on a bed, and they asked if he had any weapons. He denied having a weapon but an officer saw something on the bed, and it was knocked off onto the floor. Jackson reached down and officers saw that he had a handgun, and he was extending his arm toward them. An officer then fired several shots.
Bennett said witnesses reported that Jackson had been using drugs.
