Attorney General Kris Kobach is asking the Kansas Supreme Court to close a school funding lawsuit that was filed by school districts in Wichita and other communities.
The lawsuit was filed in 2010, and the Supreme Court issued a series of rulings beginning in 2013 to require the Legislature to increase funding for public schools and develop a more equitable school funding formula. The Supreme Court justices said the Legislature has complied with the rulings, but they kept the case open to make sure that lawmakers continue to provide adequate funding.
Closing the lawsuit would make it more difficult for school districts to force increases in funding in future years. Governor Laura Kelly has stated opposition to Kobach’s request.
