A Harvey County judge has sentenced a Newton man to 24 and a half years in prison for child sex crimes.

A hearing was held Friday for 66-year-old John Unick, who pleaded guilty in August to rape and other counts involving a child under 14 years of age.

Unick was sentenced to 294 months, and he will have to serve lifetime post release, meaning that the state corrections department will supervise him the rest of his life.  Unick will also have to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life.

The case was prosecuted with the assistance of the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Heart 2 Heart Child Advocacy Center in Newton.
