Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said a suspicious letter was received Tuesday by the Secretary of State’s office.  Similar letters have been received in election offices across the country.

The Governor said in a post on social media that law enforcement acted quickly and cleared the building, making sure that everyone was safe.   She said, “This political intimidation is absolutely unacceptable. No Kansan should ever feel unsafe because of their politics. Thank you to the KBI, KHP, and other law enforcement who are investigating this case and the letters sent this past summer.”

No details have been released.

A statement was also issued by The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) led by its President Scott Schwab, Kansas Secretary of State, and President-elect Steve Simon, Minnesota Secretary of State:

“NASS has long condemned threats toward election officials and workers, and stands again today to denounce these dangerous letters. Election officials and workers should never have to fear for their safety.

“Secretaries of State take these matters seriously and are constantly working towards creating a secure environment for our workers and citizens. We appreciate the diligent work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, state and local law enforcement officers, as well as other agencies aiding in this ongoing investigation.

“This incident reminds us that our democracy is strongest when we come together. We encourage all Americans to uplift and support the election officials in their local communities.”
