A Sedgwick County K-9 was choked and killed by a domestic violence suspect during a chase in Wichita Thursday.   Sheriff Jeff Easter said Patrol Service Dog Bane was eight years old and he had been with the Sheriff’s Office for a year and a half, coming over from the Wichita Police Department.

Shortly before noon Thursday, officers with the Wichita Police Department’s Domestic Intervention Violence Reduction Team were in the area of Pawnee and Cherry Creek, searching for a man wanted for robbery and domestic violence battery.  They saw the 24-year-old man but he ran into a creek and then into a storm drain underneath a road.  When he refused to come out, police and Sheriff’s units sent Bane and other K-9s in on extended leashes.  There was a disturbance and Bane was strangled.

A crisis intervention team was called to the scene shortly before 1:30 p.m. and an hour later, the suspect surrendered peacefully.  He was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries and then was booked into jail.

Bane was taken from the scene and a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death so formal charges can be filed.
