Officials with HumanKind Ministries said Friday they will have an emergency homeless shelter in place this weekend as a winter storm brings snow to the Wichita area.
A temporary shelter will be opened at the existing shelter at 841 North Market, starting Friday evening at 5. The shelter will be provided for individual men and women, and it will be open 24/7. All families that are in need of shelter are encouraged to go to the year-round family shelter at The Inn at 320 East Central.
The City of Wichita and HumanKind have been working to prepare an emergency shelter at the former fundamental learning center near 21st and Grove, but that facility will not be ready to open until December 1st.
HumanKind president and CEO LaTasha St. Arnault said in a press release that a few more days are needed to open the 21st Street location. She said the temporary shelter on Market will bridge the gap in shelter coverage during the next week.
