Friday’s winter storm left streets and highways covered with snow and there were dozens of slide-offs and crashes across the Wichita area during the morning hours.

Wichita schools were open, but a number of surrounding districts canceled classes for the day, including Haysville, Mulvane, Valley Center, Goddard, Maize, Cheney, Hutchinson, El Dorado and Newton.   Friends University was also closed for the day.

The Wichita Public Library closed its locations at 3 p.m. because of the weather conditions, and branch deliveries are canceled.   Botanica closed for the day.

The Orchard Park Senior Dance was canceled for Friday evening.

Officials at McConnell Air Force Base said they are on Mission Essential-Only status for Friday because of the snow storm that will be moving into south central Kansas.

The base will still be open Friday, but it will have minimized operations and limited base services.  The Commissary and Base Exchange was closed on Friday and it will resume normal business hours on Saturday.

The City of Wichita has snow plow trucks continuing to work on emergency routes and major streets before moving to secondary routes.

Wichita police have activated the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan.  If you are involved in a non-injury collision and all vehicles are drivable, please exchange information and make a report at a substation later.  If there are injuries, any vehicle is not drivable, or you believe a crime has occurred, please call 911 so an officer can respond.   The Emergency Accident Reporting plan is also in effect for Derby.

The accident reporting plan was canceled for Sedgwick County after road conditions improved, so drivers involved in an accident in the county should call 911.
