After nearly running out of water last year, the city of Caney in southeast Kansas has arranged to get water service from the city of Coffeyville.

Coffeyville city commissioners approved a plan to extend a pipeline to Caney to provide 250,000 gallons of treated water per day.  The Caney City Council had approved the plan earlier.   The project will cost about $8 million and it will take 18 months to two years to complete.

Caney, with a population of less than 2,000, declared a state of emergency in October when drought conditions affected the main water source at the Little Caney River.  Bottled water was donated to the community and conservation measures were taken, but city leaders were faced with the eventual end of the water supply.
