Boeing is taking a “hard look” at quality control after a door plug blew open on an Alaska Airlines flight. The company is planning additional inspections for its 737 Max planes.

In an email to employees, CEO of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division Stan Deal said he’ll bring in an outside party to make an assessment on the quality management system. He also wrote that Boeing has been trying to improve its “layers of protection” in recent years, but the recent incident makes it clear the manufacturer is “not where we need to be.”

Boeing is sending a team to Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita to check on the production of the door plugs.   Spirit manufactures the fuselage of the Max before sending it to the Boeing plant in Renton, Washington.

Deal said Boeing and Spirit will also allow airline customers to see the production process and provide their own inspections.
