It’s back to the drawing board for proponents of a three-eighths-of-a-cent sales tax to help fund stadium projects for both of Kansas City’s big-league sports teams.

City officials announced yesterday that a Jackson County executive had vetoed an ordinance that would put the proposed stadium sales tax on the April ballot. County legislators reportedly signed off on the measure on January 8th.

Officials with both the Chiefs’ and Royals’ franchises argue that the additional tax is needed to fund upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium and cover construction costs of a new downtown ballpark, respectively.

The Royals and Chiefs issued a joint statement saying “We respect the County Executive’s veto authority.  We will continue working with the legislators to ensure that this ordinance is on the ballot on April 2nd so that Jackson County voters have the opportunity to decide on the extension of the current 3/8-cent sales tax.”
