Officials in southeast Kansas said a woman escaped unhurt from a burning home on Friday but 9 pets died in the fire.
The fire broke out around 3 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of West Main in Sedan, in Chautauqua County. Heavy smoke was seen coming from the home and crews broke a rear bedroom window to get the woman out of the home. She was taken to a hospital where she was in stable condition with smoke inhalation.
The house was a total loss. Crews were able to rescue a dog and a cat from the house, but seven other dogs and two other cats died.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
