A vote to renew a sales tax will be on local ballots to help raise money for a new ballpark for the Kansas City Royals.
The vote Monday night by the Jackson County Legislature in Missouri was 7-2 in favor of advancing the proposal to the April 2nd ballot. The vote was an override of a veto by county executive Frank White, Jr.
The tax of three-eighths of a cent, which is currently used for upkeep at the Truman Sports Complex, also would help pay for future renovations to Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs. A specific site for the new Royals ballpark has not yet been decided.
The Royals and the Chiefs issued a statement saying that an important step forward was taken, and they look forward to continuing to work with Jackson County lawmakers.
