A federal judge has sentenced a Wichita man to almost five years in prison for making counterfeit U.S. currency.
38-year-old Joseph Bulis pleaded guilty in October to one count of manufacturing counterfeit currency and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Law enforcement officers went to a Wichita hotel in July, 2022 and they found a printer and paraphernalia used to make counterfeit money. They also found $3,000 in counterfeit money in the form of $100 and $20 bills. Bulis ran from the hotel when officers arrived, and he was arrested later, prosecutors said he had a backpack containing drawing paper, uncut counterfeit bills and cutting tools.
Prosecutors said the firearm possession charge is from a separate incident where officers found a gun in Bulis’ vehicle during a traffic stop.
