An inmate at the Sedgwick County jail has died after being taken to a hospital for chronic medical issues.

The Sheriff’s Office said a 36-year-old man was taken to a hospital on January 29th and he died Sunday.  He had been evaluated by the Detention Facility Medical Clinic a number of times over the past three years and he had been hospitalized 25 times since his arrest.

The man had been in the jail since October, 2020 on charges of aggravated indecent liberties and sexual exploitation of a child.

The Sheriff’s Office said the hospital staff had been attempting to treat him, but his condition had a very small chance of survival.  Based on medical advice, the Sheriff’s Office contacted the inmate’s family and made accommodations for them to visit the inmate on February 8th.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sheriff’s Office investigations division will look into the death.
