The Federal Emergency Management Agency will allow the state of Kansas more time to file for disaster assistance for winter weather that affected the state in January.

Governor Kelly had asked FEMA for an extension to April 15th to file a request for a federal disaster declaration.  The state is still assessing the damage from a major winter storm that moved through the state January 7th through the 16th, with heavy snowfall, strong winds and extreme wind chills.

The Governor said the additional time will allow personnel from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to gather all the necessary information to corroborate the incident period and the damages caused by the storms.
