The Wichita Police Department is working with two local agencies on an event Saturday that is aimed at reducing pet overpopulation in the community.

The Police Department, the Kansas Humane Society and the Wichita Animal Action League will be hosting a clinic to spay or neuter, vaccinate and microchip over 60 community-owned pets.    The service is free for pets being reclaimed from the Wichita Animal Shelter during the month of August.   It also involves animals identified by Wichita animal control officers as pets whose owners need assistance in getting these services.   Some owners had previously submitted applications for assistance through the Wichita Animal Action League’s Spay It Forward program.

The Kansas Humane Society is providing microchips and ID tags for the pets involved in Saturday’s event.    Humane Society president Aaron Walker said in a press release that it’s hoped this will result in fewer animals having to enter a shelter system if they become lost.
