The Wichita City Council has approved a budget for a series of neighborhood improvement projects, including a safety improvement for a street in the northwest part of the City.

Council member Bryan Frye said he has heard from residents about recent accidents along 21st Street at 119th Street West.  He said cars were using the shoulder to get around cars that were stopped to make a left turn on the two-lane street, creating a hazard for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The project will re-stripe 21st from two lanes to three from 119th West to the west side of the Northwest YMCA parking lot, creating a center left turn lane.

This project is part of a package of $30.5 million in neighborhood improvements that are being funded this year.   Some other projects call for a repaving evaluation for Jackson Height Street from Douglas to Central and an evaluation of parking for the Mid-American All-Indian Center.
