A district judge in Kansas has blocked restrictions on medication abortions while putting a new state law on hold.
Judge K. Christopher Jayaram in Kansas City issued an order suspending a new law that went into effect July 1st. The law explains what abortion providers can tell patients and it requires them to tell patients that a medication abortion can be stopped using a process endorsed by anti-abortion groups. The judge also blocked a requirement for a 24-hour waiting period for patients to end their pregnancies, and he blocked older restrictions on the information that providers can give to patients.
The ruling was issued in a case involving a lawsuit filed in Johnson County by abortion providers against the state. A trial in the lawsuit is scheduled for June, 2024, and Jayaram’s order will remain in effect through that time.
