Officials in Newton are investigating a fatal crash that happened late Monday morning.
Newton officials said the crash was reported just before 11 a.m. A semi truck was northbound on the access road between First Street and Broadway and it had stopped in the roundabout at I-135 when it was struck from behind by a commercial van. A passenger in the van was killed, and he was identified as 20-year-old Dandre Jones of Wichita. A 22-year-old Wichita man who was driving the van had minor injuries. A 23-year-old Louisiana man who was driving the semi was not injured.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The roundabout was closed for several hours while Newton police and KHP troopers were on the scene. Newton officials said speed is likely to have been a factor in the crash.
