Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said Tuesday the state revenue department will hold off on production of a new license plate, and a process will be created to get public input before choosing a final design.
The governor announced the new license plate on November 22nd, but there was a negative reaction to the design and the colors. Kansas House member Nick Hoheisel of Wichita sent a letter to the governor raising concerns over the design and a lack of public input.
Governor Kelly said the license plate will need to be clear and easy to read, and Kansas residents will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite design among several that follow specific guidelines:
- License plate numbers will be seven (7) digits.
- Any phrase, motto, or slogan must be placed at the bottom of the license plate.
- Any graphic must be placed on the right or left side of the license plate number.
- Graphics must not resemble letters, numbers, or special characters in a way that would interfere with the ability to read the license plate number.
- Background design must not interfere with the ability to read the license plate number.
- The license plate must have a light background behind the license plate number, and the license plate number must be black.
These guidelines comply with needs of law enforcement agencies and practices established by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
The Governor’s Office will have more details later on license plate options, the voting process and how this will affect the transition from embossed plates to print-on-demand plates.
