Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has refiled a lawsuit against an energy company over high natural gas prices that occurred during a severe winter storm in 2021.
The lawsuit alleges that Macquarie Energy manipulated natural gas prices during the February, 2021 storm that dropped low temperatures to around -20 degrees. The suit alleges that Macquarie, the nation’s second-largest gas marketer, manipulated natural gas prices by overpaying for natural gas from the state’s largest supplier. Macquarie passed the inflated costs on to Kansas consumers, forcing them to pay more than market forces would require. The AG’s complaint alleges that Macquarie overcharged Kansans $50 million and profited handsomely in the process.
A district judge dismissed Kobach’s previous lawsuit on a technicality.
