The Wichita Police Department has announced that applications are available for a new program for people with autism and their families.
The Autism Outreach Program is a partnership with WPD, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Heartspring, and Sedgwick County Emergency Communications. It allows for a family to enter a loved one with autism into the system, with stickers that can be placed on a vehicle, door or window. This allows police and responders to engage with someone who has autism in a more meaningful way if an emergency situation develops.
Applications can be found on the WPD website https://www.wichita.gov/536/Police
In a press release, Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed appreciation for the team that developed the program. He said the police department will continue to work on ways to serve all community members.
