Kansas Governor Laura Kelly vetoed the Republican flat tax proposal that was sent to her by the state legislature, and she called on lawmakers to work for responsible tax cuts.
In her veto message Friday afternoon, the governor called the flat tax plan “reckless” and said it would overwhelmingly benefit the super wealthy while doing next to nothing for the middle class. She urged the legislature to approve the bipartisan tax plan that was unveiled earlier this month, saying the plan “will make it easier for families to pay for groceries, child care, diapers, and school supplies – while also cutting property, sales, and retirement taxes.” The plan would cut taxes by a total of $1 billion over three years.
The governor said she would not let the Legislature leave Topeka this spring without enacting meaningful and responsible tax cuts for middle-class families, and she said she would call a special session if she has to.
